Disease Information: Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that is spread through the air from person to person. It is one of the oldest known human diseases and a major cause of mortality around the world. The disease is initiated by the deposition of the bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, onto lung alveolar surfaces. It can also spread to other parts of the body such as the brain and spine in the central nervous system. Mycobacterium was first found in the soil in which it was transported to cattle as Mycobacterium bovis. Eventually, through the domestication of cattle, this bacteria was passed onto humans in the form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The most common symptoms include a bad cough, pain in the chest, and coughing up blood or sputum. In the present day, most cases are solved by antibiotics.
